The physical data centre located in Carlisle, Cumbria complies with the most stringent of client requirements and incorporates excellent physical protection, including duplication of services (e.g. power supply backed up by both battery-powered UPS and warm standby diesel generator), resilient connections to Tier 1 Internet backbone, duplexed air conditioning, inert gas fire suppression systems and 24/7 security and envoronmental monitoring. Soft security is ensured by the deployment of sophisticated firewalls and other security technologies. Regular penetration testing ensures that the installation maintains the highest of security protection.
The data centre was subjected to a very real disaster scenario during the serious storms and extensive flooding that occurred in the Cumbrian region in January 2005. This natural disaster, a "once every 200 years event", resulted in mains electrical power outage in the city of Carlisle for 48 hours. The data centre proved that it has the highest built-in resilience, and continued operations unaffected by the massive power outage and other major disruptions caused by this disaster.
